Caring Friends

On many occasions we have shared that the expressions of love poured upon our family have deeply encouraged us.  The following reflection by the late Dutch Catholic Priest, Henri Nouwen, (1932-1996), captures the power and essence of our experience ….

When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.  The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.

Return of the Prodigal Son

Irene drove herself to and from dialysis treatment this morning but afterward her energy was diminished and she rested for the balance of the day.  The chronic nausea continues to be a momentous challenge.  We hope her energy returns and the nausea disappears as she reflects on her favorite verse and longs for a new morning ….

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23

Henry Nouwen is acknowledged for his perceptive observations in the above painting of “Return of the Prodigal Son”.  His astute observations of a caring friend are equally powerful.
